Objective: The purpose of this assignment is to encourage students to actively engage with the content by identifying main themes, reflecting on new knowledge gained, connecting the lecture content to contemporary issues or events and engaging in independent research.

Create an organized outline summarizing the key points discussed during the week using the template provided below.

I: Focus Feature

A. Synopsis: summarize the this week’s focus features in 5 bullet points or less.

B. Main Themes: Identify at least 5 main themes or key takeaways from the focus features.

C.  Key Terminology: Highlight and define at least 5 terms  or concepts discussed discussed in this week’s focus features

III.  New Knowledge Gained

A. Identify:  Identify 5 facts from Tuesday’s playbook. Explain why these facts stood out to you.

II: Responding To Core Themes:

  • What was the role and responsibility of the Freedman’s Bureau?
  • What were Black codes, organizations were created to enforce them and what impact did it have on African Americans?
  • How would you describe  house Republicans actions at the start of 39th congress?
  • How did African Americans achieve political power, what policies did they implement?
  • List 3 institutions that developed during reconstruction, explain their significance to the African American community.
  • What were the legal and non legal methods southern Democrats used to suppress Black voters?

IV: Connection to Contemporary Issues

A. Identify a current event, issue, or topic in American society that is related to the content you studied this week. Explain how the event, issue or topic connects to to the content you studied this week.

B. Discuss the implications of this connection and how it helps you make sense of what is happening in the world today.

V. Independent Study

A. Research the origins of each Historically Black College and University established in the state of Maryland.  Identify the purpose of each College and explain how the Freedmen’s Bureau played a role in its founding.

B.  Research and identify a prominent African American man and woman from Maryland during the time period studied this week.  Detail their background, contributions to America, and the significance of their work in shaping the era.

Your response should be no longer than 3 paragraphs that connect their legacy to broader themes discussed in focus features. Include at least two credible sources.
