1. 1. Put yourself in her shoes: would you have hidden the truth if you lost something valuable of your friend’s? Do you sympathize or feel Mathilde deserves her situation for trying to pretend she’s something she’s not? Explain.
   2. What does the story reveal about what Mathilde’s approach to appearances versus reality? How does this have contemporary resonance for our society?

And choose one of these from “Everyday Use” to answer as well:

1. Why does Wangero want artifacts from Mama’s home?  Do you agree with her motivations? Explain.

2. What, according to Wangero, do Mama and Maggie fail to understand? Do you think she’s right? Explain.
