Foundations of Sociology-Unit 1 Response Paper

For this assignment, we are considering the big question: What do we value? We’ll do this in the form of a response paper.

In answering this question, you should look back on the films and readings of this unit and consider both your personal values as well as societal values.  In your paper, you should answer the big question by focusing on these smaller questions:

• In my relationships with others, what is most important and why?
• In terms of material possessions, what things are valuable to me and why?
• In terms of the broader culture, how are the arts (music, movies, television, literature, etc.) a reflection of what society values and why? Compare two of the different assigned readings, videos, and/or films from this unit to answer this question. with specific quotes, details and examples.

Your essay should have an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The essay should be a minimum of 3 but no more than 4 pages in length (excluding the citation page at the end), uniformly double-spaced throughout with 1-inch margins (MLA format).  This is a first-person response, so it is appropriate to use “I” statements and personal pronouns (ex: I believe or My values are).

Additional Requirements:

• You should submit this paper as either a Word document or PDF (If you need access to Word, you can get it through the Technology Resource PageLinks to an external site.)
• You should use MLA style to format your paper and cite your sources (See your MLA Resource Page for models and information)
• You should directly use and cite at least 2 of the assigned readings and films for Unit 1 and list your sources at the end of the paper.
• Do not use any sources outside of the Canvas site and our textbook
• You should carefully proofread to make sure you have used correct citation format and to eliminate spelling/grammar errors
• This assignment will be submitted to Copyleaks to screen for plagiarism and AI generated material, so make sure you do your own work (check the Academic Honesty policy if you are unsure what constitutes plagiarism). Use of AI for this assignment is prohibited.

Assessment:

• You will be assessed according to the attached rubric.  The maximum score on this assignment is 50 points.
• This assignment must be submitted on time for full credit.  Late assignments are accepted for 24 hours past the due date but will be assessed a 5-point late penalty. After 24 hours, the assignment may not be submitted.
