Unit 2 Presentation-Life is a Playlist

Overview: Life is a Playlist

Music can bring vivid memories of persons, places, and events from our own past and serve to express our ideas about our human experience over a period of time. In constructing the soundtrack of our life, we use music as a medium to tell stories about discrete events in our lives. For this assignment, you will create and post a slide deck to the discussion board (using PPT, Google slides, or whichever slide sharing program you are comfortable with) that represents your history, culture, and experience through a curated playlist of 8 songs.

This assignment has three parts for you to present across your slide deck – Think of them like a record with Cover Art with Liner Notes, an A-side, and a B-side. Read below to learn about each of them.

  • Cover Art & Liner Notes
  • A-side: Playlist
  • B-side: Playlist Reflection

Each part has its own criteria – see the rubric for how this breaks down.

Elements: Cover Art & Liner Notes, Playlist (A-side) and Reflection (B-side)

Just like a record has an A and a B side, this assignment has two sides to it as well as a visual element (cover art) and information about the music (liner notes).

Cover Art:

On the first slide of your presentation, create some Cover Art. This does not need to be fancy, but it can be as fancy as you want it to be.  The only stipulation is that it must be an original image.  That means it can be a photograph that you (or a friend/family member) have taken.  It can also be something you have drawn and/or a digital image you have manipulated yourself (not using AI). You cannot simply use an image you have found online that you do not own.  The Cover Art should relate to the theme for your playlist.  You should give your playlist a title, and you should include your name on the Cover Art somewhere. Here is an example from a former student who used an original photograph (used with her permission):

Liner Notes:

The third slide should be your Liner Notes – a little bit of an introduction to the playlist – a short paragraph that describes your organizational theme and how it connects to your personal story. Here is an excerpt of the Liner Notes from the example project:

Playlist (A side):

Starting with the 4th slide, you will proceed to list the 8 life events you’ve chosen to share (one on each slide) and the titles and artists of songs picked out to accompany each event. Just as a DJ or record producer would, try to create a progression in the sequence of your chosen songs.  For example, your songs might be listed in the chronological order of the events they document, or they might be mixed together so that all of the slow songs are not back-to-back. You should theme it around the idea of home/belonging/purpose – any of the themes from Unit 2. DO NOT just list them randomly.  Put some thought into the order of your songs and the complete package you are presenting. For at least 4 of them, you should also post a link to the music video on YouTube.

Remember:

    • You need a total of 8 songs – be sure to identify the title/artist.
    • For each song, you should give 1-2 sentences about why this song is included as well as a short lyrical passage (quoted lyrics from the song) that speaks to your theme.
    • Feel free to dress up the slides as you see fit, but you must at minimum have the title/artist, a link (for at least 4) to the videos, and the 1-2 sentence explanation + lyrics.

The Reflection (B-side):

This is the conclusion to the assignment.  It is a general summation of the playlist as well as a discussion of what music means to you and to a larger sense, to culture. Connect to at least 2 of the sources we’ve read/viewed in this module and use/cite them as part of your discussion. This reflection should be posted across 2-3 slides and should be 350-500 words in length.

Citation Information:

Your final slide should list the (minimum 2) sources from Unit 2 that you have connected to in your reflection.

Additional Information:

  • You should directly use and cite at least 2 of the assigned readings, videos, and films for Unit 2. You should list your unit sources on the final slide of the presentation (songs do not need to be listed).
  • You will be assessed according to the attached rubric.  The maximum score on this assignment is 100 points.
  • This assignment must be done on time – it may not be submitted late and cannot be made up.
  • You must also view and respond to at least one of your peers’ playlist.
