HUMN-1030-6: Week 3: Cultural Humility

Week 3: Cultural Humility

As a human services practitioner, you will inevitably work with diverse cultures and ones about which you know very little. How do you ensure that you will work effectively with others from different cultures? What do you know about yourself and your own culture that will help you understand how you see the world and how the world might see you? As a professional, you must strive to acquire the knowledge and skill to display cultural humility, and that path begins with looking within yourself.

To Prepare

  • Review your course announcements for possible information related to this week’s Discussion.
  • Review the Learning Resources, and consider what the following statement means: In order to understand others, one must understand themselves.
  • Review the Hays (2016) cultural self-assessment, and think about the importance of cultural humility in human services work and how you need to develop the knowledge and skills to employ cultural humility in your work.
  • Review the videos and consider how your identity may influence your interactions with others.

Post an explanation of the importance of cultural humility for a human services practitioner. Explain how a human services professional practitioner can demonstrate cultural humility when working with diverse populations. Provide an example.
