Week 5: Shanghai Travelogue
This week, you will write a 350- to 600-word (2–3 pages) travelogue about Shanghai. At the end of the course, you will draw upon this and subsequent Assignments to compile your Final Project.
- Describe the natural geographic features of Shanghai and the surrounding area during the 1900-1945 time period. Use your own words. Imagine you are walking around Shanghai and the surrounding region. What stands out in terms of natural landforms (such as mountains, valleys, deserts) and bodies of water (lakes, rivers, glaciers, oceans, etc.).
- Select a major historical event between 1900-1945 that affected residents of Shanghai. Describe it in detail. Include relevant dates.
- Explain how the event affected residents of Shanghai.
- Select one example of cultural expression (a song, a piece of art or literature, etc.) that reflects life in the city and explain whether it is connected to the major historical event. Include a tie to one of the course resources listed within the cultural expression resource list provided in this course.
- Discuss the justice or injustice of the event itself or the justice or injustice of human responses to the event.
- Imagine that you are living in this city during this time period. What do you think it would have been like to live in the city during this time period?
