WEEK 2: Race, Racism, and the Experience of Social Stigma

Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum, read Chapters 5 and 10 in Understanding the Psychology of Diversity (Blaine & Brenchley, 2021). Watch the video How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Discussing RaceLinks to an external site..

Blaine and Brenchley (2021) discussed that thinking about people in terms of their race is inevitable, and that primary reactions, or stereotypes, about people based on their race are largely unavoidable. In Chapter 10, the authors also explore the concept of social stigma, noting that “to be stigmatized is to possess an attribute or status that has negative social implications or prompts in others’ stereotypic judgments, prejudice, or discrimination” (p. 197).

In this discussion forum, consider the impact of stereotype and prejudice and how social stigma is experienced by others. Prepare a PowerPoint presentation that addresses the requirements below and which you could use to brief other leaders and managers in an organization. Include at least 75 words of text in the Notes section below each content slide, explaining the key points you would cover if you were presenting the information to a group of organizational leaders and managers.

In a PowerPoint (see How to Make a PowerPoint PresentationLinks to an external site.) presentation of at least 10 slides (including a title and reference slide) and citing at least two required resources,

  • Debate the essential biological meaning of “race.”
    • Explain why such little agreement on racial categories exists and how stereotypes come to serve as substitutes for explanations of differences between groups of people.
  • Explain the connection between racism and social stigma regarding race.
  • Explore the way people talk about race and racism, and how these conversations can lead to social stigma and alienation.
  • Propose ways of having conversations about race and racism in an organizational setting.

Post your PowerPoint presentation and speaker notes as an attachment to your discussion, and include a brief commentary in the discussion textbox that would serve to introduce the training presentation to other leaders and managers (e.g., What they would learn by participating in the training session?).
