Length: circa 15 pages
In place of the partner-based research activities of the Snapshot project, you are asked to complete a research proposal for a qualitative study on a topic arising from the migration-related discussions and materials covered in the lectures and the first BSA portfolio.
- Working from the research question you developed in the BSA project, refine or revise it as needed to serve as the question framing the proposed study;
- Find 5 journal articles – which must be directly related and relevant to your question
- Write a brief literature review that summarises this material so as to guide the development of your research design; this should include a 1 page introduction re: how you came to choose the topic, why it is important, followed by a 4-page review of the literature you’ve found; you may also use any of the material assigned or covered in the course.
- Your research design should include the following:
- 1 page overview explaining why qualitative methods are suited to your proposed study
- 1 page overview of who would participate, where the study would be located etc
- Explain how you would use documentary analysis in this study (2pgs)
- Explain how you would use interviews in this study (2pgs), plus a list of interview questions
- Explain how you would use EITHER visual OR ethnographic/participant observation methods (2 pgs)
- Explain how you would use EITHER participatory or programme evaluation methods (2pgs)
NOTE: you will need to use the assigned readings re: the methods listed in your overviews; and may also draw on the journal articles that provide accounts of how different methods were used. You may also combine some of these methods (ie., a participatory method that focuses on visual data activities), but you must clearly document how and why you’re using them in a way that responds to the requirements of your particular topic and qualitative methods as a whole.
Discuss the ethical issues involved in your study (2pgs)
Bibliography of all works used (these must be cited properly in the text according to the citation format of your choice.
