Assignment 12: Diving in
Then, in the Word or Google doc in which you wrote out your research question, write paragraph-long annotations of each source. Like the summary you wrote for Unit 1, your annotations should include observations about the sources’ arguments (use some of the terms you used for Assignment 5) and rhetorical situations (sources’ audiences, purposes, and contexts).
The annotations should also pose additional-but-related questions that grew out of your reading of the sources, and they should explain the sources’ relevance to your inquiry.
This document will serve as your research trail, and you will continue to add to it in future assignments.
Annotated Bibliography Expectations (for ENGL121)
- Each annotation should include a brief summary. Then, from there, you will state the following:
- How this source answers or addresses your research question – how it contributes to your understanding of the ongoing conversations surrounding this topic
- How the source connects with or conflicts with other sources (synthesis)
- What role(s) this source may play in your next (argumentative) essay
- Why you trust this source
Below is an awkward paragraph that demonstrates how this information can be included in one annotation paragraph. The most effective annotation paragraphs will not copy and paste from this template but will reword the information in order to make it more coherent and logical.
