Assignment 14 Composing an Annotated Bibliography
Compose an annotated bibliography of your own that cites the works by McCloud, the other scholarly text that you chose to read, and the additional four scholarly sources that you located for the previous assignments.
First, watch the following tutorial about composing a works cited page using MLA style:
Then, cite each source (you can use MLA style, which is described in the video, or APA). From the HCC Library homepage, view the tutorial, “Cite & Write,”(Links to an external site.) and then, from the menu on the left select either MLA Style or APA Style. This will take you to a menu of pages that will offer guidance on creating citations, or you can use the OWL site linked above. Adhere to the basic rules to make sure you have the general format right. Then, be sure to use the correct format for each source type (for example, article, book, etc.).
The conventions for works cited pages(Links to an external site.) are very specific and strict, though the correct answers are available in a multitude of places; using the library site—or any other current and reliable resource—try to ensure that the format of your works cited is 100% error-free.
As a reminder, here are the formal criteria for the annotated bibliography assignment (with tips for meeting the criteria in blue!:
- Adhere to MLA or APA conventions for formatting a bibliography or works cited page (follow the formatting guidelines carefully, ensuring that you are using the correct format for the source type, and using punctuation, quotes, and italics as the guidelines stipulate)
- Provide bibliographic citations for the course theme texts and four additional relevant and timely scholarly sources (be sure to include six total sources–McCloud, the other scholarly text you chose, and the four that you located on your own)
- Accompany each citation with detailed annotations that offer insight into the arguments the texts make, the rhetorical conditions surrounding the production of those texts, the relevance of the texts to the student’s inquiry, and questions the text raises (draw on the work you did for Assignments 5, 6, and 7 to identify your sources’ claims, how they support those claims, what context they’re writing in, whom they’re writing for, and what they want that audience to think, feel, or do after reading their work, explain the connection to your central research interest, and pose question for further research)Annotated Bibliography Expectations (for ENGL121)
- Each annotation should include a brief summary. Then, from there, you will state the following:
- How this source answers or addresses your research question – how it contributes to your understanding of the ongoing conversations surrounding this topic
- How the source connects with or conflicts with other sources (synthesis)
- What role(s) this source may play in your next (argumentative) essay
- Why you trust this source
Below is an awkward paragraph that demonstrates how this information can be included in one annotation paragraph. The most effective annotation paragraphs will not copy and paste from this template but will reword the information in order to make it more coherent and logical.
