Assignment 24: Developing a sense of style

First, drawing on the previous assignments write a paragraph summing up your project so far. Some questions you might address are: Who is the intended audience? What do you want that audience to think, feel, or do after reading/viewing your project? What kinds of genre and modalities (media) does your audience consume? How will you reach that audience? How will you craft your project for this unit strategically to accomplish your purpose with your particular audience?

Then, to develop a more sophisticated understanding of the kind of project you’d like to do, locate three examples of other texts in the genre/modality you’d like to compose in and read/view them. For example, if satire is the genre you’ve selected, then you’ll have to locate and read three examples of the sort of satire you intend to do. If you’ve selected documentary film, then you’ll want to find three versions of that (preferably on topics similar to yours). And if you’ve selected websites or blogs, then you’ll want to look at three versions of those (again, on topics similar to yours).

Hint: if you’re still struggling with these concepts, genre and modality, or with the kinds of things you might do for this project, review the instructional videos from the previous assignment and/or speak with your instructor or a CLC tutorLinks to an external site..

For each of your three examples, write several paragraphs analyzing the following:

  • Content: What is usually discussed?
  • Style: In what manner is it discussed?
  • Tone: Is it serious? Playful? Dramatic?
  • Structure: What is the overarching organizational logic?
  • Conventions: What seem to be the commonly-accepted “rules” for composing in this genre or modality? What sets it apart from other genres or modalities?
  • Visual appearance: What is the typical look and feel? Note: Content, style, and tone might help for this bullet as well. Note: even if the examples you’re looking at are traditional essays, it’s still worth noting things like the font, formatting, and visual layout.
  • Are there any other elements particular to this genre or mode that are worth discussing?

Requirements: Word or Google doc, double spaced, 12pt font

Note: remember that your end destination for this unit is to build on the research project you did for the previous unit by reaching out to an audience affected by or implicated in your topic, and by persuading them to support your position on the topic through making composing decisions–including but not limited to genre and modality–that your selected audience will find engaging and persuasive.
