Discuss something funny

Return to the Introduce Yourself! discussion from the Orientation Module in which you and your peers posted short videos that you found funny. Choose a video that you didn’t write about for that discussion and that you find puzzling, enigmatic, or striking in some way. Watch the video once for fun, and then watch it again through the lens of the rhetorical concepts you just read about (ethos, logos, and pathos) as well as audience and purpose.

Step 1: Write a post in which you link the video you chose, and the rhetorically analyze the video by breaking down its audience, purpose, and context. Your analysis can take the form of bullets (one bullet each for audience, purpose, and context), though you should write a paragraph for each bullet and refer to specific examples from the video.

Step 2: Read TWO of your peers’ initial posts (and watch the videos); FOR EACH, write two or three sentences pointing out what you found insightful about your peers’ analysis and two or three sentences making observations about the videos that your peers didn’t note. As with the initial post, be sure to provide specific examples to support your observations.

This discussion will be worth 10 points.

Write several paragraphs making rhetorical observations about McCloud’s chapter Download McCloud’s chapter. Use the sections titled, “What is Rhetorical Analysis?” and “What is Rhetorical Situation?” from the chapter you just read–” Rhetorical Analysis”Links to an external site. in Critical Reading, Critical Writing: A Handbook to Understanding College Composition as a guide.

The paragraphs don’t need to take essay form—so they don’t need an introduction or conclusion, and they don’t need to flow from one to the next—though they should provide detailed observations that are supported by evidence from the text. And you should write at least one substantial paragraph for each area of analysis: audience, purpose, and context. These observations will eventually make their way into the final product for this unit: your summary and analysis of McCloud’s chapter.
