Assignment 9- Making a connection
Think back through your work with McCloud’s chapter
Way back for Assignment 3, you “describe[d] any of your past experiences, present interests, or future ambitions that you [saw] addressed in the text, as well as what you [knew], [didn’t] know, and might like to know about issues raised in the text.” Now that you’ve re-read McCloud’s text frontwards, backwards, and sideways, consider how you might expand on your answers for that assignment. Here are some questions to guide your reflection:
- What personal relationships are important to you, and what role might issues raised in the text play in those relationships?
- What are your academic ambitions, and how might issues raised in the text be relevant to your intended major?
- Similarly, what are your professional ambitions, and how might issues raised in the text be relevant to that field?
- What kinds of culture do you enjoy, and in what way might the issues raised in the text be relevant to that culture?
- What issue, debate, or recent current event seems significant to you, and in what way might the issues raised in the text be relevant?
- What is something that was raised in the text–an idea, a way of looking at things, a research angle, etc.–that surprised you and that you might be interested in researching further?
Write a reflection that expands upon your response(s) to 1-3 of the bullets above that were most engaging to you. Your reflection need not take essay form–it doesn’t need things like an introduction, body, or conclusion–but it should do the following:
1) Give a detailed explanation of the personal connection (or connections) to the content of McCloud’s text that seem most striking or engaging to you. For example, if you felt that there was a strong connection between some of your personal relationships and an issue raised in the text, describe the people, your connection to them, and how issue raised in the text is relevant. Or if you saw a connection between an issue raised in the text and some show or movie you enjoy, then provide an overview of the show or movie, explain what you like about it or what is important to you, and then explain the connection to the text. Write approximately 3 detailed paragraphs about this (or these) connection(s).
2) Write a detailed paragraph about what the text would say about the connection(s), ambition(s), debate(s), etc. that you wrote about for the previous bullet. Note: if you wrote about multiple issues in the previous bullet, you don’t necessarily have to write about all of them for this stage.
3) Look back to your submission for Assignment 8; explain which questions seem most relevant to you personally and pose 2-3 additional questions that are better connected to your personal interests.
