Dementia-Pathophysiology and Medical Management
Dementia is a syndrome that is normally associated with the ongoing turn down of the brain and its abilities. Some problems associated with the syndrome include memory loss, mental agility, judgment, understanding, and thinking speed. This disorder develops when parts of the brain that is involved with learning, decision making, memory and language has been affected by one or more of a selection of infections or diseases. The most common cause of dementia is the Alzheimer’s disease, and there are other cases as well. There are several situations that would probably cause dementia. Diseases that affect the blood vessels like stroke can cause a disorder called multi-infarct. In addition, there are toxic reactions like excessive alcohol or other drug abuse. Nutritional deficiencies like the vitamin B12 or folate deficiency. In cases of head injuries in either a single severe head injury or the chronic smaller injuries that normally occur from boxing and other illnesses that are not associated with the brain such as kidney, liver and lung diseases are also constituent causes of dementia.
