Métis Culture

Carefully read Brenda Macdougall’s book One of the Family: Métis Culture in Nineteenth-Century Northwestern Saskatchewan. This is the first written assignment for the course and is intended to familiarize the student with an important aspect of Métis history and culture and allow them to produce a concise, carefully crafted and edited critical review. (A critical review takes a particular point of view and critically evaluates the book. It is not a simple book report). While this assignment and its content do not necessarily fit into the general chronology being discussed during this part of the course, the inclusion of this book at this time is to help familiarize students with an interesting and focused work on the complex social and historical realities of one Métis community.The paper should be 750 to 1000 words or approximately 3- 4 typed pages (with twelve-point Times New Roman or equivalent, double-spaced, with margins of 2.54 cm on all sides. The papers must be written clearly and be free of typographical errors). Please ensure that you provide proper documentation of sources (either footnotes or endnotes). The paper should review the book critically analyze the author’s arguments, use of evidence and analysis and put forth an argument of their own.
