WEEK 4 Assignment: It Begins with a Leader
Prior to beginning work on this assignment, read Chapters 2 and 10 in Jacobs and Crockett (2021) and the articles by Bagga, Gera, & Haque (2022), and Hart (2022).
A top leader has an enormous impact on an organization’s culture. Jacobs and Crokett (2021) identified that a leader sets the tone for the experiences people have at work.
Imagine you are responsible for coaching a leader, Dan Jackson, who recently assumed ownership of a local landscaping business. Jackson met with you to describe what he is dealing with in assuming his new role. He revealed to you that the prior leader of the business was his father-in law and that Jackson worked for his father-in-law for about two years prior to buying the business from him. Jackson’s father-in-law was not well-liked or trusted by the employees. They described him as negative, disconnected, and uncaring. Jackson stated that his father-in-law lacked a clear mission and vision. While Jackson did establish goals for the business, they are being interpreted by management staff in different ways. Employees currently complain that they are getting mixed messages about how to do their jobs, and they state they do not trust management. Formal communication is non-existent, with many employees engaging in ineffective, informal methods of communication. You must coach this new leader in their role of influencing the organization’s culture.
