WEEK 4 Discussion 2: Failing to Change Organizational Culture

Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum, read Chapters 2 and 10 in Jacobs and Crockett (2021).

Mateo Katlin just purchased a local convenience store. After assuming leadership, Katlin met with the store management team and discovered that turnover among the staff was very high. Katlin’s managers told him that employees complained that their jobs are boring and that they do not want to do the work. Morale and productivity are low. Katlin’s observations are that employees have bad attitudes and spend too much time gossiping with one another. Customers frequently complain about poor service.

Katlin decided to implement a “Changing Attitudes” program in the store. This program focuses on employee self-improvement and approaching work with a positive attitude. He provided information about the program to his management staff and instructed them to implement it. Despite meeting with his managers weekly, Katlin rarely mentions the program’s implementation until a few months later. He discovers that several of his managers tried to implement the program but were unsuccessful. A few others did not attempt to implement the program.
