Week 6: Critiquing Employment Opportunities
Prior to beginning work on this assignment, you may wish to review the chapters in Blaine and Brenchley (2021) and Thompson (2021) assigned during previous weeks of the class. As necessary, review assigned and recommended readings and websites, and review assigned multimedia recordings.
In this paper, you will critically analyze a category of people subject to discrimination in the workplace. You will analyze the historical background of discrimination against this group of people, the protective policies and laws affecting this group, and the future of DEI efforts to support and promote this group in the workplace. You may choose to focus your analysis from among the marginalized groups we have studied throughout this class: racial and ethnic minorities, women, individuals who are LGBTQ+, individuals with disabilities, and older people.

Part 1: History and Background of Discrimination
- Describe the history of discrimination against the group you have decided to profile.
- Identify ways in which members of this group been discriminated against in the workplace and for what reasons.
- Link this discrimination in the workplace to corresponding social bias and prejudice.
- Identify previous laws or governmental policies and practices that marginalized this group of people.
- Summarize the effect such discrimination has had on this group.
Part 2: Workplace Initiatives to Combat Discrimination
- Critique the laws and governmental actions that have been enacted or undertaken to protect this group and the consequences of these laws and governmental actions.
- In what ways have these laws and governmental actions succeeded in protecting the human and civil rights of this group?
- In what ways have these laws and governmental actions fallen short in protecting the human and civil rights of this group?
- Identify contemporary practices within organizations designed to ensure fair and equal employment opportunities for people in this group, and equitable opportunities in the workplace, including access to promotional opportunities.
- Propose a set of strategic initiatives that could help an organization with inclusion and equal opportunities for this group of people.
- Identify potential obstacles to enacting such initiatives, including opposition by members of majority groups.
