Outline: Implementing Jim Crow & The Nadir of Race Relations

Objective: The purpose of this assignment is to encourage students to actively engage with the content by identifying main themes, reflecting on new knowledge gained, connecting the lecture content to contemporary issues or events and engaging in independent research.

Create an organized outline summarizing the key points discussed during the week using the template provided below.

• The importance of Black publications during the implementation of Jim Crow, how did the challenge mainstream depictions of Black Americans?

• Compare and Contrast the leadership styles of Booker T. Washington, WEB DuBois & Ida B. Wells.  How did their methods to fighting Jim Crow differ and explain what leader resonated with you.
• How was media used to belittle African Americans and in what ways did African Americans use media to counter those negative images
• What was the “Birth Of A Nation” how did it reinforce  racist ideas and justified acts of terror against the African American community?

A. Identify a current event, issue, or topic in American society that is related to the content you studied this week. Explain how the event, issue or topic connects to to the content you studied this week.

B. Discuss the implications of this connection and how it helps you make sense of what is happening in the world today.

V. Independent Study

A. Research and identify two Jim Crow Laws that were established in the state of Maryland.  Explain how these laws undermined the gains made during reconstruction and reinforced White supremacy.

B.  Research and identify a prominent African American man and woman from Maryland during the time period studied this week.  Detail their background, contributions to America, and the significance of their work in shaping the era.

Your response should be no longer than 3 paragraphs, connect their legacy to broader themes discussed in class. Include at least two credible sources.
