Polygraph Test on Employees

Polygraph Test on Employees-Should an employer be allowed to give an employee a polygraph test to see if the employee is being dishonest? What if the employee volunteers (suggests) the use of a polygraph test to prove his/her innocence in order to save him/herself from discipline?
