SOCW-2001:Week 10 D2: Social Work Interview Presentation

Week 10: Social Work Interview Presentation

In the first Discussion this week, you imagined how a social worker might use their role and skills to enact change related to crime and the criminal justice response. Now you consider the role and skills of the social worker within the agency you visited. What problems is that social worker addressing in the community? What gets them excited about social work? And how has this “nuts and bolts” look at the field influenced you and your career plans?

For this Discussion, you create a presentation based on your interview and agency visit. You will then share your presentation with your colleagues.

To prepare:

  • Following your interview and agency visit, reflect on your experience. What did you learn?
  • Develop a PowerPoint presentation giving an overview of the agency and the social work role. Consider the following prior to recording your presentation:
    • Be creative. Add images and design elements that visually enrich your presentation. Use the PowerPoint link in the Learning Resources for quick tips on working with this software. You may also use the provided template and Tips for Effective Presentations graphic for support, if desired.
    • Write out what you will say for each slide. Practice your timing so that your presentation meets the designated length requirements.
    • Ensure that you have a quiet place to record and that you are presenting yourself professionally. Formal, professional presentations are important for social work.
  • After you have created your PowerPoint slides and prepared, record yourself giving the presentation in Kaltura. Be sure to share your screen so that the PowerPoint slides are visible. See the Kaltura guide in the Learning Resources for instructions on using Personal Capture to record your presentation and Kaltura Media to upload your presentation for submission.
  • Create and post a 3-minute recorded PowerPoint presentation. The presentation should cover:
    • Agency description, including services offered
    • Agency mission
    • Agency clientele
    • Social worker job activities and professional roles
    • Explanation of what brought the interviewee to the field, including their work history
    • Bachelor’s- and master’s-level salary ranges for social work staff
    • Key takeaway (How does learning this influence your plans to pursue to social work?)
