Week 2: Homework Assignment 1

Subscribe and install PHStat, an add-in program to Microsoft Excel that will help us by doing time-consuming calculations. The program is actually just a collection of Excel macros.  This is why is doesn’t run alone, but only in conjunction with Excel.  It is very easy to use.  The program is provided by Prentice Hall, the publisher of our textbook.

Go to this link: https://media.pearsoncmg.com/ph/esm/shared_statistics/phstats/cw/. Follow the instructions.

Make sure PHStat runs. Open PHStat. You may see a dialogue box asking if you want to enable macros–select Enable Macros.  [Remember these are just Excel macros; they won’t hurt your computer.]  If the program is installed properly, a new tab, Add-Ins, will display on the main Excel menu.  Select the tab and PHStat will display on the left underneath the File menu.

Post confirmation here that PHStat is installed (to receive credit for this item). Post an image of your Excel, which shows the PHStat tab. See the images below.

Item 2 (5 points)

Instruction: Give at least five variables from the paragraph below, and classify each as either numerical continuous, numerical discrete, nominal categorical or nominal ordinal.

Clue: There is a similar problem from Week 1 practice problems.

A typical Super Steak restaurant serves anywhere from 200 to 500 full meals every day. Fast customer turnover is essential, which in turn requires high reliability from the staff, so attendance records are kept to document how many hours a month each employee is absent from work. A customer’s total bill depends on the entrée and side dishes ordered and the kind of wine consumed—Super Steak’s wine list is quite limited, with only pinot noir, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, and merlot being offered. Wine prices are very reasonable, ranging from $15 to $35 a bottle. Beer is also available in three different sizes of pitcher, ranging from smallest to largest: Super Pitcher, Colossal Pitcher, and Titanic Pitcher.

Item 3(6 points)

  1. Differentiate population and sample. Provide an example to differentiate the two.
  2. Differentiate parameter and statistics. Provide an example to differentiate the two.

Item 4 (4 points)

Instruction: Study the Pareto diagram below, which shows the sources of “medication errors” in hospitals. Then answer the questions below.

  1. Approximately what % of all errors is caused by Duplicate Order Entry?
  2. Approximately what % of all errors is caused by Order Not Received?
  3. Which categories of errors account for approximately 65% of all errors?
  4. Which categories of errors account for approximately 85 % of all errors?
